Rooted in traditions dating back to the 12th century, when the Jurade, a local administrative and judicial body, was established to oversee and safeguard the wines of Saint-Emilion, the festival holds deep historical significance. The Jurade’s role was to uphold the quality and reputation of wines produced in the region.

At the heart of the festival, the Ban des Vendanges, or Harvest Proclamation, takes centre stage. Led by the Jurade, adorned in their distinctive red robes and hats, a ceremonial parade winds through Saint-Emilion’s narrow streets, officially heralding the start of the harvest season.
